Blue Horizon Bluegrass Band at West Branch Hall May 28, 2011

It is our great pleasure to present one of Nova Scotia’s finest young Bluegrass Bands to the West Branch audience. Blue Horizon is a dynamic, traditionally based Bluegrass band. Formed in 2006 they currently have three albums to their credit. The most recent “My Saviour” is a strong gospel album that has received significant attention. Their albums will be available at the concert.

This is a rare opportunity to hear the finest Bluegrass in a concert session.

Blue Horizon is a young, enthusiastic, energetic, and entertaining band from Amherst, Nova Scotia. They stood out for their strong instrumentals and solid singing. Several samples of their work can be found on their MySpace page. A significant body of their performance is material the band itself has composed, always a welcome gift at festivals where many cover bands play familiar songs all too frequently. This band is original and delightful. (Quote from their website.)

Here are 4 Videos from U Tube that are representative of the bands style. Please note there has been a personnel change, The individual playing guitar is no longer with the band.

They are also represented on MySpace, there you can listen to 5 or 6 of their songs. Here is a link to that site:

Here are Bios of the band members:
Joe Doucette, Dobro
Joe is from the small village of Chignecto Nova Scotia. Joe is twenty-two years old and has been playing the Dobro for five years. Joe was introduced to a Dobro when he was at an event where Dobro player Alan Robichaud was. Alan showed him a few things then Joe was off to work on his skills with this new instrument. Joe was nominated for Dobro player of the year at the 2005, 2006 and is now the 2007 “Dobro Player of the Year” by the Eastern Canada Bluegrass Music Awards. Joe sings lead vocals, harmony and also plays the guitar. Not only is Joe a sweetheart, but he is presently dating a little sweetheart herself who resides in Maccan, NS. Stacey White brings a lot of fun to our musical events and we all love her so much. Mary and Jessie met “Joevon” or “Dobro-Joe” at the Rollo-Bay Bluegrass Festival in 2003. The band just wouldn’t be the same without him.

Jessie Haley, Mandolin
Jessie is from Amherst Nova Scotia. Jessie started playing the mandolin at the age of twelve and has been singing for as long as she can remember. Jessie sings lead vocals and also enjoys playing the guitar. Proud to be playing her Daddies old “A Style” Washburn Mandolin, she has mastered many old timey tunes and diddies and has developed a strong solid “chop” on the mandolin to go along with the hard driving bluegrass band. Jessie has recorded one of her own original songs entitled “My Mother Marjorie” which can be found on the “No More Tears” album, and has just recorded another one of her own pieces entitled “The Cumberland County Train” which was release in December 2007 on the “No Stoppin’ Now” album.

Mary Haley, Bass
Mary is from Amherst Nova Scotia. Mary purchased her first bass fiddle in 2003 and has now become one of the finest female bass players around the Maritimes. Mary sings lead and harmony vocals and also enjoys playing the guitar. Mary thoroughly enjoys playing her bass, and has very much fun doing so. Bluegrass Music is one of Mary’s passions. She just can’t live without it. Mary also plays a huge roll in booking great events for the band and keeps the band extremely organized. Thank you Mary for all your hard work. Without you who knows where we’d be?

Larry Rushton, Banjo
Larry is from Amherst Nova Scotia. Larry attended his first bluegrass festival at the age of twelve and has been hooked ever since. Invited to the event by Alan Robichaud, of the Rustic Harmony Bluegrass Band, Larry recollects that this was the time he started his love for bluegrass music. Over the years Larry has played a solid guitar and has taught himself how to play a mean five string banjo. Larry also plays mandolin and Dobro. He gets even more credit for his exceptional “bluegrass voice”. Everyone loves it!! ….

Brent Crocker will open the evenings performance Mar 26, 8PM

Good fortune came our way when I met Brent Crocker today in New Glasgow. Many of you may know his music as he played on the soundtrack for the Redtail video. They portrayed the beautiful nature scenes at the land that the Redtail/Sheltering Forests group was purchasing on the Macbeth Road.

In any event he is home from Quebec and will open the evening’s performance for the Smokin’ Contra Band. He plays an instrument called a Weissenborn, which I was not familiar with, but now am anxious to hear him play.

Immediately after these comments is the Sheltering Forests video featuring Brent Crocker playing a tune written by Harry Manx. (Incidentally, Sheltering Forests was successful in it’s attempt to buy the land referred to in the video. However, there is a small mortgage and I’m sure they would appreciate any further help that they could get. It is a beautiful piece of land, and a very worthwhile project.)

Below that are some videos that should give us an idea of what we can expect from the instrument. They do not necessarily represent what Mr. Crocker will be playing and they are not him playing. We’ll have that pleasure.

And here is some history of the instrument : http://www.weissenborn.es/g_history.htm

Mr. Crocker thought that the work oh Harry Manx was extraordinary, so I have included a link to his website here:
http://www.harrymanx.com/. Dog My Cat was a highly recommended album and if you are on the site can navigate to it easily.
We are very grateful for his performance

Smokin Contra Band at West Branch March 26, 8PM

It is our great pleasure to introduce to the West Branch area the Smokin Contra Band. They are a quintet of excellent musicians that play a full repertoire of string band music;Bluegrass, Folk, Celtic and Old Timey.

Smokin’ Contra Band began playing jigs and reels in the fall of 2006 in kitchens and living rooms around Halifax. Soon they were hosting monthly contra dances in the New England style at local dance halls. The band tried on a few different venues for size before settling on its current home of St. Matthias Church on the corner of Chebucto and Windsor Sts.

In summer 2007 the band decided to try its hand at bluegrass. Dave’s rippin’ mandolin and Amy’s searing fiddle licks fit nicely in between Ben, Amy and Dave’s sweet 3-part harmonies, while Graham’s rollickin, punchy bass lines and Jason’s foot-stomping and washboard-scrubbing made the band a local dance favorite. The following summer SCB took its show from bar(n)s in Ontario to youth centres and community gardens in Quebec and back around the Maritimes; in the winter of 2009 they had the good fortune to work with CBC producer Glenn Misener and sound engineer Pat Martin to record their first album, Slim’ Pickins, available at the concert. Slim Pickins went on to be nominated for the ECMA Bluegrass album of the year in 2010 They are currently working on their second album, to be out this summer.

Some of you will recognize the fiddle player, Amy, who performed at West Branch with Dusty Kelleher late last year.

Here is a link to their MySpace site: http://www.myspace.com/smokincontraband At that site there are 6 samples of their music.

This is the trio that will be performing at West Branch on Sunday Jan 23rd at 2:00PM or so. The video was taken at Victoria Park in Truro.

On it there are six really nice tunes by Mr. Simms playing and singing solo. This site is a couple of years old and Mr. Simms has added greatly to his repertoire since then with a new album due out later this year. The fuller sound of the trio will be performing on that album. Still, it is nice to hear solo voice accompanied by solo guitar, especially when it is done well!
